Here’s the story of Tim and Jessica: Friends, both single and curious, who decided to date for 40 days and share their journey with the world.
What would happen if Harry met Sally in the age of Tinder and Snapchat? Manhattanites and graphic designers Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh decided to find out — and the platonic friends embarked on the tenuous mission of dating each other for 40 days. The adventure was chronicled in a blog — and now a book — for all to see.
The ground rules were simple: see each other every day for 40 days, go on at least 3 dates a week, see a couple’s therapist, and don’t hook up with anyone else in that time frame. With these rules in place, the two launched their design-heavy blog, “40 Days of Dating,” in , hoping to “cure” one another of their dating bad habits. Now, a year and a half later, they have a book out under the same name, out Feb. And no stone in their relationship is left unturned. Think of the bright orange book as a field guide to Millennial dating in New York City.
Every text message, tweet, and scrap of dating ephemera like restaurant receipts, Magnolia bakery cartons and even a corporate condom, are methodically filed and documented in the day experiment. Beginning in March , Goodman and Walsh dated, ate, drank and bickered across New York City, with their fights chronicled on iMessage and Facebook chats pasted in the book. Even their couple’s therapist weighs in on their social experiment, noting their relationship patterns “were largely related to their particular family histories.
To many fans’ delight, the book picks up where the blog left off, after Day The couple — spoiler alert — doesn’t end up together, though both Walsh and Goodman say there are no hard feelings, and they remain close. Said Walsh: “We make great friends, but there’s something off romantically that never would have worked.

They documented the social experiment on a blog, 40 Days of Dating , launched in July In , Walsh and Goodman began a second project together, which they described as a “step experiment designed to open [their] hearts, eyes, and minds”. 40 Days Of Dating: The Future Of Relationships Or Total Nonsense?
Goodman prefers to date casually, sometimes seeing several women at the same time. Walsh, on the other hand, is a self-described “hopeless romantic” who jumps too quickly — her words — into relationships. But the two also have a lot in common. They both live in New York City , work as graphic designers and have been friends for the past four years. In March, after finding themselves newly single and equally frustrated, they started dating for a day experiment, with plans to document the entire journey, day-by-day.
That was then.
What would it feel like to date a longtime friend for 40 days and nights? That was the challenge that two thirtyish New York City-based graphic designers, Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh, took on when they played a self-imposed dating game between March 20 and April 28, and recorded the experience. Although romance wasn’t in the cards, their audacious experiment generated a blog that triggered a storm of visual responses. Their reasons for embarking upon the social experiment sound uncannily like the plot of When Harry Met Sally.
As long-time friends and design colleagues, Goodman and Walsh had frequent, long conversations about their relationship issues. So, to explore their habits and fears in relationships, Goodman tells me, the pair decided to date.
